Good use for worn out rail and welding short pieces
together will probably last forever in a cattle guard.
Maybe a bad thing for RR buffs?
A friend in Boulder, CO discovered old RR rail used
instead of wood 2x10" or 2x12" supports for a home
addition floor in an old house they remodeled. It is
still there. Old NG rail appears also in a crumbled
1890's resort fireplace above Eldorado Springs, CO.
The local County Gov't is supposed to have used old
rail stacked and left behind at the West side of Alpine
Tunnel for cattle guards or another purpose. Maybe
a waste but what do you do with the stuff?
The CRRM in the early 60's sold worn rail cut for
bookends. I don't think they sold well.
