Thanks BCP, very interesting, we have a zig zag here in Australia, but it's operation is different to this - trains change direction twice but continue in a east to west direction and use the zig zag to climb an escarpment.
This one trains come from the south (roughly) and go back out south so I now see why the turntable had to used and it's function, very ingenious.
