At Laws, it may have been because of land. The valuation map of Laws indicates that the land was purchased from private owners.

Valuation map for Hammil shows that the railroad purchased the extra land for the wye in 1916. This was a active ranching and hay farming area (as it still is) Hammil station and the Hammil Valley is named for the Hammil family (several brothers) who were ranching there when the railroad was built.
