Continued from above "Warmer-Upper" post -
The next morning - 08/
15/66 - having missed the departure of an eastbound freight, we watched the Silverton train leave town
:**
. . . and followed her as far as the truss bridge at Hermosa
:
We caught up to the freight when it stopped in Gato to take water and for the crew to eat lunch
:
The mystery is, I remember chasing the freight from Durango out east toward Ignacio, Tiffany and Arboles, but I don't have any photos? I only had one camera, and those last two shots are contiguous on the roll with the Silverton Train pics, which are on the same roll as the pics in the yard, which couldn't be '68 cause the Two Towers were gone by then ... ?? Maybe The Shadow knows, and Jimmy Blouch??? Or Ernie Robart.* But IIRC, we didn't meet Ernie and his friend Olaf Rasmussen for the first time 'til the next day, above the S-curves between Dalton and Cresco

: I was right - Ernie DID know. Or rather his book did - see [
ngdiscussion.net]. The last two pics above were almost undoubtedly taken on August
25 15, 1966, the other three probably that morning, and the previous ones in the yard on the day before.

: Per an email from Ernie, #492 did run from Durango to Chama on August 25, 1966 but without a helper. #492 also ran from Durango to Chama
- WITH #483 - on August 15th, so
the above photos at Gato were actually taken on the August 15th, and the earlier photos in the yard on a very quiet Sunday afternoon - August 14th, 1966.

: Per a series of posts by Ernie's friend Olaf Rasmussen – see [
ngdiscussion.net]
et seq –
the bags of sand on the running boards of the two locos in the fourth photo above confirm that this was the same freight harassed by Jim Marcus on 08/15/66.
