Chipmunks are little bitty critturs - only about twice the size of the common house mouse, IIRC.
Then there's the Golden Mantled Ground Squirrel, which a lot of people mistakenly call Chipmunks,
which are two or three times as big. Maybe Roger can be talked into posting pictures of each of
them, since both animals can be seen along the C&TS, especially at Cumbres and at Osier, IIRC.
What we call ground squirrels out here are about the size of - and look a lot like - prairie dogs. The four-legged ones, that is. The two-legged variety is commonly 5'5" to 6'6" in height, and of widely varying weight. Like foamers, they tend to froth at the mouth and they too are frequently associated with Hollyweird. There are lots and lots of both varieties in the Ojai Valley, which is how Ojai stole the title 'Ground Squirrel Capital of the World' from Valley Springs, CA, a few years ago - when the judges from Ireland agreed that the two-legged type qualified for inclusion in the count ...
Added 05/14/15: Chipmunks and both varieties of ground squirrels can clearly be seen on the video posted by Jason Rose at [ngdiscussion.net].
