Interesting question!

I haven't read it in a while, but as I remember it, Philip Hastings's 1956 Trains article about the operations of the San Juan Extension, "Into the Freezing Darkness," tells of riding a westbound freight through the night between Alamosa and Chama. Again, if I remember correctly, he was riding aboard and reporting on a typical train movement of the time.
