If you search back through Jimmy Blouch's postings of train operations at various times in the past, you'll find that many of the Rio Grande's freight operations took place at night. For example, it was quite common for a train to pull out of Chama at 11 PM or later, and arrive at Antonito around 6 AM, and Alamosa at 9 AM.
