In New Braunfels, Texas the old MKT right-of-way was abandoned by UP after they acquired both the Katy and MoPac there. After a while, the local water park (Schlitterbahn) took over the right-of-way and built a long stringy parking lot.
A short time later, the UP bought the SP. We all know what kind of havoc that created. To offload traffic, the UP reactivated that section of the MoPac line. So, about a half-mile of former MKT track has *really great* ballast; three inches of asphalt on top of ten inches of base.
