Woody:
Guess the UP won the war.
I have seen many papers, clippings, etc. in my historical research about the rivarly between the D&RGW and UP "Through the Rockies, Not Around Them." When the D&RGW got their 1500 series 4-8-2s in the early 20s, they got into a big debate with the UP in the press about who had the biggest 4-8-2s (guess the UP had just gotten a new batch).
If the UP had their way, some day there may not be an operating railroad in the Colorado Rockies. Sure was hoping the BNSF would grab the Tennesee Pass line. Guess it will never run again...too bad, neatest piece of standard gauge I have ever seen (well, I forgot the Monarch branch).
