This branch has been for sale for some time . Part of the sale is the "West Main" half of the joint-double track from Pueblo to Walsenburg (East Main belongs to the BNSF).The BNSF wants the West Main badly ,but didn't like that part of the sale was the Alamosa branch . I heard $4.5 miilion for the package . If a deal was brokered where the BNSF took the West Main and someone else took the Alamosa Branch ,the the deal would happen . Who bought the Branch ? The San Luis Central was often mentioned as a potential bidder .Several shortine operators like Kyle were interested as well . I hears that some former D&RGW people have tried to put a deal together in the past .Business is still strong to Antonito and Monte Vista .The problem is the big roads hate operating over mountain passes ,especially the UP . Though it has been decades since there were any bad derailments on La Veta I have it on very good authority that there were soem very close calls with soem near-runaways .Operations are mostly at night ,with the westbound clearing Walsenburg between 1 and 2am. It is a very long and lonely run ,and crews often told me it is a tough one .Snow ? Not a big problem lately ,but there have been long droughts before ,and the heavy snows may return .
