Actually from well up on the hill above the tracks - here's the best I could do with the extremely underexposed shot immediately prior to the second one above:

Actually it was #483 that pulled the train from Chama to Durango. #498 was the road engine eastbound, with #484 as helper from Chama to Cumbres. I went with Ernie to a spot above Dalton overlooking Lobato, but made the big mistake of adding a cheap 2X extender to my 70-150 zoom. As you can clearly see, my shots from that morning are so fuzzy they're not worth re-scanning:

Ernie chased #498 eastbound as far as the overlook near m.p.326, then turned around to chase #483 westbound to Durango and then the last train to Farmington on Saturday, August 31. Meanwhile, I drove to Antonito and then south as far as the little trestle - now a culvert - just beyond Hangman's at m.p. 286.72. See [
