Thursday, 08/29/68. 14 loads of lumber - The last D&RGW revenue freight over Cumbres.
These would cost a bit more to duplicate than the previous six, but it COULD be done
...
There's not much left of the snow fences near Apache Crossing today.
My lifetime favorite photo - "The Last Freight"
:
#498's fire was killed about three hours later, and she hasn't run since
; the little trestle at m.p. 286.72 was "culvertized" in 2009
...
I shore wuz tempted to "PhotoShop" #315's marker(s) onto #498, above. (See [
ngdiscussion.net]).
BTW, the headlight was NOT lit in the first shot, just below Tanglefoot, but WAS lit in the third one (?!?!?). IIRC, both D&RGW and S.P. kept headlights on even in daytime, as management thought this - along with the aluminum smoke-box fronts - made the engines more visible and reduced grade-crossing accidents.
