In another thread, John West referred to the emotion of going back fifty years and more -
to the glory days of the Narrow Gauge. On 06/16, I tried to replicate the emotions and three
of my photos from August, 1968 - the very last D&RGW revenue freights over cumbres.
(See #2 & #3 on [
ngdiscussion.net])
The first, from the highway just below Tanglefoot Curve, is similar to what 50 other people
probably have, but it replicates a favorite shot of #498 on her last day of service.
The second - where the snow fences used to reside near Apache Crossing - is close, but
the '68 photo was taken from the old road, MUCH closer to the tracks ...
For the third one, I was hoping for a near-duplicate of my all-time favorite photo - #498 with the Last Freight crossing the small trestle at mp 286.72. I even found what's left of the telegraphone pole that I leaned on to stabilize my Pentax 70-150 zoom in '68. When I first reviewed the shot on my camera's LCD, I thought it was a bust - the shadows from the back lighting were just too deep. But after a little manipulation, it doesn't seem so bad after all. #315 shore does have a purty face, and having both markers lit
* helps too!

The Last Freight, redux. (m.p. 286.72):

* a little 'poor-man's PhotoShop' "magic" ...
