August 28, 1968 -
Helper #483 had been cut off at Cumbres, and is shown here drifting light downgrade at Coxo.
Note that construction of the new highway is well underway
:
About twenty minutes later the clouds had thinned, and after taking on water #484 followed with the rest of the train:
This was the last revenue freight to operate westbound over Cumbres pass - 18 cars of drilling supplies and two flats of wallboard headed to Farmington. The last revenue loads - 14 boxcars of lumber from Durango - crossed the pass eastbound the following day. IIRC #473 crossed the pass eastbound in mid-September headed to the shops in Alamosa, and #483 pulled the National Park Service Special from Durango to Alamosa in late November. The very last D&RGW train over Cumbres was pulled by #473 with #483 helping and #481 dead in train on December 5. #483 returned from Chama to Alamosa the next day, while #473 pulled the non-revenue "hospital" train on to Durango.
