My experience is clearly very small with just our Heisler and 19 and our grade is not terribly steep nor long. (Steep enough when snow and ice covered as proven on the photo special). None the less when I fire either engine, I always try to run the injector at the lowest setting and let it run for as long as needed. Most of the time even at min. setting one can catch up, but I do recall some years back when we were running with extra cars for a holiday weekend and a tank car in the train for spraying the ROW. This was a heavy train for #3 and once we got above Hwy 7, I never turned the injector off. Despite fire danger I never quit throwing wood or we would not have made it without a stop. As I recall we did 6 round trips over two days like that. I believe it stands to reason that feeding water at a rate to balance the water leaving the boiler as steam will be far better on the boiler than on and off big slugs of water as I have seen some fireman do.
