To answer what a "hot well" is by judging from the 1909 plan (not shown) of the piping system is that it is basicly a condenser from the exhaust of the duplex engine before going to one of intakes for the feed water heater and then either going to the feed pump and then going to the old locomotive stationary boilers or going to the wash out pump and then going to wash out locomotive boilers in the roundhouse. CRRM Chief Mechanical Officer Jack Campbell said that when he was CMO on the CATS that part of the shafting support structure was intact at that time above the former location of the 10"x 10" duplex stationary shop engine. What a beautiful elevation drawing showing the shop engine, shafting, belts and pulleys for the machine shop that Mike posted. Where do we find one...
I allways wondered why the power house at Chama required 3 boilers for such a small machine shop. That steam also was used for warming up cold boilers, oil in the oil house and for steam heating for the Chama depot.
