Both cars will have a live lever (one with no fixed pieces connected to the cylinder and the brake wheel) and a dead lever (one fixed to a bracket mounted to the sill). Both examples you present have the same configuration of levers and rods that transmit the motion from the brake cylinder to the trucks. The difference is the length of the rods and the placement of the pieces. Any number of placements are possible, depending for starters on the placement of the cylinder: if it was tight to one needle beam, it might be possible to get the live lever inside the other needle beam (the later configuration shows both levers outside the needle beams).

I suggest you consult images of wrecks shortly after the TOC for clues.
