In a nutshell, around the late 40's, the parts of 317 & 318 were combined to make one good engine. The boiler, cab & cylinder saddle of the 318 were used and the frame and running gear of the 317 were utilized. The resulting locomotive kept the number 318.

There were rumors that a similar conversion took place between the 316 & 319, but since neither of those locos survive, it's difficult to confirm this.
