Thanks for posting those photos Paul. They certainly do give clear evidence of the condition of the locomotive. I would think that successfully welding a cracked frame would be a very demanding and require excellent skills and technique. Looking at those welds, and also other welds all over locomotives #5 and #2, I doubt that the Quincy welders possessed those special welding skills.
I mentioned above about reading of cracked frame problems with #4 and an inability to fix them by welding, resulting in the premature scrapping of that engine. It is interesting that the same type of frame cracking problems apparently plagued #3.
