Newfoundland NG - STEAM

Here's the first batch of photos from the Andrew Merrilees Collection - National Archives in Ottawa Ontario/Canada. I'm pretty sure by the literally hundreds of Newfoundland shots, that Andrew must have bought a local photographer's studio, because the boxes contain many coastal steamer/shipping pics as well as railway scenes.

Interestingly most of the locos were by Baldwin, giving them a very American appearance. All 3'6" gauge, and all photos are prior to 1949 when the railway became part of Canadian National Railways.

Just to briefly explain some dates and lettering on the locos. Parts of the railway were first built a bit privately and by the Newfoundland Government.
- then the Reid-Newfoundland company assumed operations 1898-1923
- Newfoundland Railway (Newfoundland Gov't) 1926-1949.
- absorbed into Canadian National Railways in 1949

An old Baldwin eightwheeler from 1891 - number unknown but one of Reid-Newfoundland 40, 41, 42, 0r 43




At some point, Reid-Newfoundland Baldwin eightwheeler 40 of 1893 acquired side tanks as well as her tender.




Reid-Newfoundland Mogul 60 was a Baldwin of 1891, originally built for the Hall's Bay Railway. Note the bell atop the dome.




Baldwin builders photo of tenwheeler 108 built in 1900. Interesting that it was lettered for the Newfoundland Rly as operated by the government, just before Reid-Newfoundland Co. takeover.




Reid-Newfoundland 151 was a Baldwin Consolidation of 1903 - seen here in her later Newfoundland Railway days.
