... which is why placing 497's running gear under #492's boiler makes the most sense insofar as returning a K-37 to service at the least total cost is concerned. This is well within common practices on railroads during the steam era, when keeping as many locomotives as possible in running order often meant swapping tenders, air pumps and other appliances, and yes - sometimes even frames and wheels.
Per Roger Hogan, the money we raised for #483 with his penny machines and our screen saver - about $4,500 total - will be used toward the thorough COSMETIC restoration of this engine. This will help preserve her for a possible COMPLETE restoration several years from now, when increased ridership on the C&TS will hopefully require additional motive power. In the meantime, IIRC, plans are to place her on display near the Chama depot, along with Rotary OM.
Also IIRC - per Earl Knoob, Rotary OY was "mothballed" following her last use a few years ago, and should require only minimal maintenance and lubrication
