Just an additional note on superheater dampers.
While most of the early superheated (SH) engines had dampers, the reason most of the dampers were removed was because The Superheater Co had developed the hammer forged steel return bends. The earlier bends were threaded pipe 180 degree ells and when overheated, got loose and leaked.
There were some engines that never had them removed. Usually, but not always, that was a whim of a Master Mechanic that held onto an old practice. (The 1st engine to operate at Central City for example, probably because of being a oil burner/no arch/no combustion chamber????)
I do not know of any engine out there (you never know, there could be one) that has those old style threaded return bends. Most engines, after going thru number of shoppings had the units repaired, changed out or sent back to The SH Co for rework. Kind of an early "unit exchange"!
Sorry guys, that is a diesel term and its the best I could do on short notice!
