I understand that a K-37 is not superheated, it is a "soak." K-36's are superheated. I understand the difference between saturated steam and superheated steam.
My question is how is superheated steam created (superheaters does not completely answer that question - how do they work is what I am asking) and how can you tell a locomotive is a soak and or superheated just by looking at it? Or can you?
My guess is superheater equipment would logically be inside the boiler. I just want to know if there is a way to tell the two apart visually from the exterior and how the entire process actually works.
For those of you with mechanical knowledge of these things who are willing to share with the great unwashed like me, I thank you in advance.
