Russ and Mark,
The fifties is somewhat a family account of the 1954 & 1956 trips. 1956 was my initiation to the NG. You guys should get the "Rio Grande Steam in the 1960's" someday. This is all from 16mm shot over about 8-10 years(actually starts in 1957, and 464 is the yard switcher). Mostly trackside views.
As for music, we have to be careful not to use copyrighted materials.
We can't just pick any old music we want, like you see on the nightly news or some other show. Those guys pay ASCAP a blanket yearly fee to have the rights to do that, which is way more than you or I could afford.
We generally have production music that we have selected from hundreds of CD's we have had to purchase over the years. Its tough finding appropriate stuff, especially when you need to fill 60-90 minutes.
In many respects working with the older stuff creates more costs and more challenges. The good part though is that its unique material, and usually historical in nature, not a photo charter where everyone is getting the same shots. On the flip side its nice shooting contemporary video, having the train sounds, and not needing music at all.
