After an easier hike up out of the canyon we head further south to try to find the next large bridge. The grade along this stretch overlooks the Gila River which the next bridge will cross. Guthrie Mountain at about 4500' is a prominent landmark for the length of this hike.
Down below the Gila flows and brings life to this harsh landscape. The Gila start in New Mexico and runs about 650 miles and becomes a tributary of the Colorado near Yuma. Unfortunately it dries up before it gets there due to all of the use along the way. In this region it provides a nice riparian habitat.
The land starts to open up as we head toward the east. As we will later find out the grade becomes the route of the distant power lines. We start seeing homes in this area as we are getting quite close to Guthrie. I think we are still on BLM land as we are still close to the river and I do see a fence off to the left of the grade that probably starts the private land. We do see signs that a vehicle has recently been down this section of the grade.
That is all for this evening. If I have time tomorrow we will check out the Gila River bridge.
