Back to the #497 taillight issue, taking a closer look at the pictures of #497 on pages 174 -175 of NG Pictorial Vol XI I think I've found another mystery. On page 174 there appears to be a Pyle offset lamp on the right side of the tender, and the photo credit is for 1944. However, on page 175 it appears that the lamp is the small center mount and the photo credit is 1949. The 1944 photo is from Kindig and Mike Trent has a 1950 picture of #497 also from Kindig showing no lamp! Maybe it's time to stop and say I don't care! :-) Pages 174-175 also show an additional tender patch on the lower right at the front of the tender, just before the curve of the tender shell at the front. By 1949 it has been reworked to a different repair.
Personal dialog with both Mike Trent and Robert Furrer suggests that the 1944 Kindig picture actually has the Pyle light centerd on the rear of the tender, attached to a bracket the hangs off of the end so the light doesn't interfere with the opening of the water hatch.
So the tender light situation for the #497 is an odd odyssey. Anybody with any additional pictures out there?
