MMI has just come out with their long announced On3 model of the K-37. Unlike with earlier models, I think they have a major quality issue this time. See [
www.trainboard.com]. There had been quality problems with earlier models as well, but it seems by far less than this time. But there are also features on this model that I wonder whether they can be considered prototypical. There are two that I would like to ask about here, after my limited range of pictures did not conclusively answer my doubts.
- The model has a rather high board at the rear of the coal compartment. My available pictures only show lower boards with more rounded corners if they are dicernible at all. The rough edge of the lens of the backup light is one of the quality issues mentioned.
- The handrails of the cab look like in the K-36, whereas my pictures seem to indicate that they should be longer with a distinct wide curve at the bottom. Needless to say that the protruding wire on the model is not prototypical at all.
My questions are, have there been versions or individual cases where the model would depict the prototype? I have only found two likely cases for the handrails in NG Pictorial Vol I on pages 161 and 167. And I wonder whether those depict an original state or one which would be the result of a quick repair job.
