My dad was a longtime modeler and railfan. In July, 1967 he decided to take his oldest son (me) on a road trip to see the Colorado narrow gauge in his brand new 1967 Mustang. On our trip from Phoenix to Durango, we stopped in Farmington, found the yard and asked some guy unloading a box car if the train was running today. He said go north you'll find it around Bondad (wherever that was).
Sure enough, we found the train pulling away from Bondad Tank. We ran ahead to the crossing and caught 487 complete with that Giant wedge plow slicing through the weeds, that big Lunkenhimer whistle clearing the way.
too cool....
As we were packing to head home several days later, we heard 473 (with Andy Payne running) blast (and I do mean BLAST)out out of town with 10 dump gons loaded with slag ballast. I will never forget that whistle as long as I live.
way too cool..............
