Great idea for a topic!!
I was 6 and we rode the C&TS on the 4th of July in 1976. Tomorrow is the 25th anniversary of my getting bit by the NG Bug. As a kid you always see things bigger than they are but I remember much of that trip very clearly. I remember going over the trestle at Lobato and everyone was looking out the windows on the same side...I just knew we were going to tip over. Osier was COLD. I mean real cold. I don't have a clue where they stopped for the run by but it was towards Antonito. I remember a Hispanic gentleman picking up a dried cowpie and announcing to his buddies that it was a Cowboy Frisbee.
We went to Durango a couple of days later. We didn't return for many years but the memories of that trip were still fresh in my mind about 5 years back when a friend of mine and I decide to make a big road trip vacation. We both picked places to go and I came back for both train rides and the CRRM. I picked up several books and got bit by the RGS as well. It's been all downhill from there. And what a wonderful trip it has been.
My thanks go out to the men and women who keep these trains running and keeping the past alive. So much of what I enjoy doing now in life revolves around that one trip.
