Better lighting for safety of the workers? Its hard to argue with that. How about the "other" night lighting issue, security....If the C&TS gets the increased ridership it so desperately needs, not all of them will be as, well... honest as we'd all wish. It's a fact of life.
Decent lighting should help deter some people from shopping at the midnite souvenir shop, and make the others easier to spot as well. I agree that modern stadium lights would look out of place, but much of the industrial lighting from the 40s and 50s was even more hideous. A nice compromise might be fluted cast iron poles and hooded lamps with globes...but I don't doubt they would be expensive IF you could even still get them.
As for that Wal-Mart parking lot glow you object to, IMHO if it prevented one woman shopping late there from being abducted, then they did their job well.
