My first year in Chama were with the box car coaches and those lovely steps. They were very difficult to handle from inside the cars. The train crews would climb over the curtains between the cars and by using the end and side grab irons, climb down to the ground and open the steps from the ground. That worked much better. Ditto with putting the steps up. Every once in a while some in-a-hurry passenger would try to open the steps themselves, and you'd have to forcefully-but-gently tell that that was a real bad idea.
