This is a re-post of an earlier "Then and Now" comparision of the wreck site of SPNG #14 which rolled over on June 15, 1915 and killed Fireman John Fitzgerald and Head brakeman Willard Oliver. I decided to re-post this as it seemed appropriate to honor the #14's ill fated crew and to show some additional images of what has happened since George Sapp and I found the wreck site in 2005 (on June 15 no less). Here's the "Then and Now" comparison with George occupying the location of one of the clean up crew:
When we found the wreck site there were only scattered pieces of metal and a large congealed mass of oil to indicate something terrible had happened here. In 2006 George and I returned to the wreck site to see if anything might lie buried below the surface. We found a couple of journal box pieces, a few spikes, and the end of #14's Fireman's side brass handrail complete with a nice brass finial. Anything else that might be there was buried beneath the congealed oil which we found was hard as asphalt and we had no way of getting through. We returned again in 2007 and the picture below shows the beginning of our quest:
