I can clearly remember the day when I the narrow gauge bug caught me. It was 1981 when I was on a family trip to Durango and as we reached the 550 overpass we saw the 478 returning light back to Durnango after being a helper earlier in the day. We fallowed the 478 back into Durango and we proceeded to the depot to see if we could get a closer look. Fourntunatly the gates were open and the 481 was switching cars for the next day's passenger runs. Only being in the second grade at the time I was immediately hooked, I was so facinated with these steam locomotives which ran on tracks only 36" apart. Living in Montrose at the time I had seen the occasional standard gauge train-not a very common sight in those day's, but there was something magical seeing a real live steam engine in operation which left me in awe. From that day on I studied and sought out all the literature I could about the D&RGW narrow gauge. After moving to Gunnison I was fortunate to discover that the public library had an abundance of great books about the Rio Grande and RGS. I would check out 10 books or more at a time. It was also kind of cool going to school across the street from where the 268 now resides. It is funny how a single event can change someone's entire life forever. I need to get back to Colorado--I've been living in Virginia for far to long. I wish I could have seen the narrow gauge in action in the 50's or 60's. I would love to hear how the narrow gauge bug caught you.
