You may speak as an IT professional, but you also speak as a member of "Generation-Y" (that which follows "Generation-X").
As someone who was working as an IT professional before people knew to use the term, I remember when 1200 baud (1.2K) was a
big improvement over 110 baud (0.1K). Each person has to set priorities within the framework of the possibilities available to him. When we lived in Kansas, we were barely on the edge of town ... any further out and cable would have be unavailable, and our only high-speed option would have cost something like $50/month and we would have had to obtain a fairly pricey radio modem. Even when the price is "only" $20 a month, some people feel that they have a better use for those funds.
My high-school age daughter, who is Gen-Y, took a programming course last year, but I can't imagine her following in my footsteps professionally. She can't imagine "being out of touch", and would pay almost anything (and forego almost anything else) in order to have a high speed connection.
So, I guess you'll need to be patient with us as long as we're around.
