When you save an image in Photoshop you should use "Save for web" rather than "Save As" that way you can adjust compression and other settings on the fly and get a preview of what the final output will look like.
Umm... no, thanks.
This is beyond the scope of what I was trying to illustrate but, frankly, I don't use Photoshop for saving jpegs at all - the "Save as..." at full Q-level was for illustrative purposes only. Photoshop's jpeg codec (using either method) is dramatically inferior to any one of several 3rd party packages for a variety of reasons. Had I used Photoshop to compress as much as I did, you
WOULD see obvious differences. In any case, there are also some inherent disadvantages to using "Save for web...", including the fact that it strips all exif metadata from files.
As for the dialup issue, believe it or not, there are users (many who participate here) who for very valid reasons are still on dialup. We've had this discussion here in the recent past and, while I've not had to suffer dialup personally for many years, I do have sympathy for those still afflicted.
