The subject of reconverting some of the rider boxes was first discussed during the team leader meeting at the end of the August work session. The word from the Railroad was that 3 rider coaches were "unusable". The original thought on rebuilding these cars was to free up cars for charter freights. It is almost impossible to use some of the cars that are used for storage in trains. If we rebuilt the three, we could use the cars in the worst physical shape for storage and the better cars to go up the hill.
The rider boxes are used for the moonlight train every year and during the peak times for overflow. I don't see there being enough "new coaches" to put the rider boxes out of work for many years. The cars were converted to meet the need in true narrow gauge fashion and a handful should be kept as rider coaches forever.
I think Bob Tully's crew should be applauded for their great work on the car!!
