Probably the biggest drawback to the 470's as time wore on was their comparitivly smaller size and tractive effort.

That was why the D&RGW let 7 of them go.

As to specific design issues, the front mounted airpump, placed there for improved visability on the left side, caused problems, both freezing up in cold weather and distance from the tanks.
