Doug,
I've ridden that train a lot of times, and I've seen some cases of beligerant or intoxicated behavior, but not many. It's worse when there are problems like having to double the hill, inferior brains are simply not able to process difficulty. Too bad a couple of ignorant peckerwoods spoiled that experience for you. My ex-wife's Sister once almost started a cat fight with an Arizona woman in Silverton over a dirty diaper which had been placed on her seat. The Sheriff restored order, but it was pretty unpleasant, the lowlight of the day for us and everyone else in the coach at the time.
I seem to recall that after '64, the roster of equipment was an odd number of cars, 21. First train carried 11 cars every day and when a Private Car had been chartered, then both trains carried 11. Those K-28's ran at capacity every day. When the remaining wood cars had been rebuilt steel, a Private Car charter left one coach behind, unlike before.
THe D&S uses the 470's with only 7 cars now.
