Hi Mike,
Isn't it interesting that an incident when we are young has a higher emotional impact than when we are older and wiser?
Thank God for the Gallop Goose Group and #5. I'd probably not gone back to ride the Silverton if not for the Goose.
At that Railfest, I rode Eureka Again (the first time was on the C&TS), The Goose (my first time in #5), and the Parlor car on the regular Silverton run. Mom (68 at the time) and I were first on the parlor car and selected the two seats at the rear of the car so we could look out the back windows. We knew these would be our favorite from riding the back platform of 05635 on the C&TS. We enjoy the watching the scenery and track rolling out behind us.
One of my visits to Durango in the 1990's was to take the Roundhouse Tour. I met Amos Cordoba and was fascinated by his knowledge. Since it was post season on the C&TS and the D&S was slow, myself and one other were on the tour. When I saw all the patterns for catings there, I asked if I could get up closer and look at them. He said OK. Fascinating patterns for all sorts of items.
I guess Amos was the only original D&RGW man I ever met.
