Both engines are based on the 50 ton design first built in 1952 for United Fruit in Panama and an unknown company in the Dominican Republic. When SP ordered the #1, it was already a standard GE model. The 805 was built just ahead of the #1, but I'm not sure if they were on GE's shop floor at the same time. I know they differ as built in that SP#1 had numberboards and standard gauge truck frames (SP obviously knew their ng was on borrowed time, and had the option of stand gauging it/increasing its resale value). The 720 was built in 1957 after the U-series was in production. It has a larger fuel tank and different engine air intakes (the air intakes being similiar to the U series - xUSG/GTLRR units). It was not all that uncommon for a customer to order an older design on purpose to standardize, but they did apparently aquire U series (maybe larger U6B?) at a later date. Both locomotives (805 & 720)have since been re-engined (still CATS), the change from a V-12 to a V-8 caused the air compressor cabinets to be modified extending one more door forward. 805 also has an added radiator expansion tank visible on the roof.
As mentioned, almost all the high voltage cable had already been stripped by thieves from both units, any donations to SVRR for the repair of 720 would be appreciated. It is hoped to have it in service sometime next year and work may start on it soon after a certain other diesel is finished.
