There is going to be a lot of three foot equipment awaiting new homes that are parked in El Salvador and Guatemala. It only takes a orginzation like SV to be in right place at the right time. I am sure there a lot of possible candidates for restoration or just the hardware, such as trucks, brake systems or even cars that could be useful to restoration projects.
The only thing that is fast in Central and South America is the scrappers. The locals also have the attitude if it closed then we should use the materials for our basic needs. So rails, parts and especially valuable metals disappear, if no one is guarding the property.
In Peru where I spend a limited amount of time. Several pieces of former North American railroading have disappeared to the scrappers. Both the SV 4-6-0 #50 on the Cusco and Santa Ana line and the ex WP&Y 2-8-2's at the Casa Grande plantation near Trujillo. Even in Peru we will be having equipment for sale in 2008, most likely scrapped at the FCHH. Since the Government is converting it to standard gauge. Two steam locos will likely become displays. The former FCHH 2-6-0 #112 is on display at the Huancayo depot.
How were the Panama diesels shipped?
