It is also worth remembering that Thomas' creator Rev. Wilbur Awdry was a keen railway enthusiast, including narrow-gauge, and he was a keen supporter of the pioneering Talyllyn Railway in Wales, on which his Skarloey Railway stories are based. However, other British narrow gauge railway locomotives also featured in his and his son Christopher's books in various guises.

PS I ought to add that not only did Wilbur's son Christopher, for whom the Thomas stories were orignially created, inherit his father's enthusiasm, so did his grandchildren.
