For those of us who have little interest in the throttle, but enjoy the challenge of firing, it's a win-win.
I participated in a "Driver Experience Course" in the UK a while back. Each 2-hour slot featured two round-trips - one as fireman, one as driver (engineer). The firing was the best part, and I would have been content to spend both trips behind the scoop. (edit: two paying participants were in the cab simultaneously - one driving, one firing, then switching for the second run.)
Now, McEwen is a little more remote than . . . well, anywhere in England, really, so just offering slots and having people sign up for them isn't as feasible. But I suspect you'd find a market.
One tourist line even offers (or offered) a "crew for a day" package - five people getting together for a truly unique event.
