Andrew, I misunderstood sorry...I see what you mean about the sides of the roof now.
I do see why the Rio Grande decided to paint the Silverton cars, and they had this same sceme on Standard Gauge cars even in the 50's, so it was really a more uniform color for the Rio Grande than it was to "Pretty-up" the Silverton Train....at least thats the opinion I like to hold onto. My point was that the Grande Gold, was in fact used on regular Standard Gauge Trains, which were far more important to the railroad than the NG operations were at the time.
Thus the Grande Gold was a true Rio Grande Color.
I think the current color is a C&TS thing which has nothing to do with what used to be, but what a few wanted to painted it.
Like you I think the C&TS should hold to a bit higher standard than your average run of the mill start-from-scratch tourist pike!!!
That said I like the paint scheme of the SLRG in Alamosa with their tuscan red and yellow flying Rio Grande on their new diesel. Reminds me of Norfolk and Western with that scheme. And they got the Tuscan red color right too!!! It looks very attractive, and since its a new railroad, whatever they choose is fine. Give them credit for picking something attractive with a bit of historical flare.
I am beyond complaining about the C&TS coaches, cause what I care matters not. I'm glad I did my "Chased By A Steam Train" stuff in 1997 when we made a similar looking San Juan with green coaches. See picture.
