Back in 1989, a group of Friends went (got sent) to Alamosa, along with some of the C&TS section crew, to remove a three-rail switch from the closed Public Service Co. of Colorado plant there. (This Friends crew was nicknamed "F Troop", and included several of us who are still active in the Friends). It was a backbreaking job that could be a story of its own, but I digress.
Public Service Co. sent the "manager" of the plant, Walt Golden, down from Salida to "oversee" our removal of the switch. He was a heck of nice guy (and I'm sorry to say that I don't even know if he is still around); I mentioned to him that I was then researching a book on Salida. Come to find out that he was also the manager of the Salida Hydro Plants. From that contact, I was later able to arrange a personally guided tour of the plants, which are not open to the public. That's how I got the interior photos that appear in the Trails book, as well as much valuable history about the plants. I think those power plants are an interesting part of the local history, and it was because of my volunteer work in the Friends that I made the contact with Mr. Golden, who made possible for me to include the history in the book.
