Right you are Mike. Its amazing how as we get older certain things envoke nostalgia. The same things we were appalled at when we experienced them - such as diamond stack on K28's. I can look at a 60's - 70's shot of the Silveton and still remember the magic of the place. Still remember the thrill of being 12 years old and going on our family vacation to Durango - to ride THE train.
My first ride behind 476 was in 1968. I can vividly remember a dark rainy day. We rode the rear end gon. 476 fought snotty rail all the way to Silverton. We had a tonnage drag of 12 cars including the B3 on the rear. The B3 was rented by Graham Claytor of the Southern Ry. A most gracious gentleman, he allowed us a peek into the car he was renting for the day.
476 was (I mean IS!!) a classy machine, it was the last K28 to carry a set of class markers in regular service.
If it were my zoo over there, 473 would be 1950 yellow, 476 would be as in 1955 - straight stack with a fake box headlight, 478 would be as it was on the last San Juan - pilot plow, number boards, straight stack. Of course, I've never been known to be normal.........
