Although Bob did not have much patience with the "rivet counters" he was a historian who insisted on historical accuracy at the museum. I remember on one of my visits overhearing a discussion between Bob and one of the volunteers about how to paint a recently restored car. The volunteer was emphatically stating the case that gloss enamel paint lasted longer than flat finish, and that ultimately, to paint everything in gloss enamel would save the museum money. Bob was quietly stating that the railroads used flat paint, and although he knew that gloss would save the museum money, it was not correct, and as long as he was in charge, things would be done correctly. It was not an arguement, simply a statement of fact. As long as he was in charge, things would be done right, or not at all. That to me showed his sense of history and his passion for things being true to history.
