Isn't there room for both?

Not taking potshots at you personally, but there is one hole in your theory. The money "wasted" on bad brass models probably would have been spent on something else rather than being donated anyway, so it isn't really a loss to the preservation effort at all.
I often just skim or skip things that don't interest me. Some strings I initially thought boring have eventually turned into something more interesting. The bottom line is this hobby encompasses a LOT of varied interests, so if you post about what you like, I post about what I like, and when everybody else does the same we've got a vital and dynamic board. Once you start saying "Don't post that garbage here", the board starts to wither.
