Hi Phil,
The CHS's library in Denver has a couple of maps of the projected routes over Loveland Pass from Graymont to Keystone, creating a more direct route to Denver.
Another interesting tidbit was the Union Pacific & Western Colorado Railroad. It was projected form Fort Steele (no relation) into North Park, over Rabbit Ears Pass and into Kremmling. There was about 40 miles of grading done and the railroad itself is mentioned in one of the UP Annual Reports. I see the grade daily.
In the Stephen Hart Library at the CHS there is a map showing an extension of the South Park line from Dillon to Kremmling. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to put those two together to make a route from the UP main line directly to Leadville. I wonder what the ramifications of this line, if completed, would have meant to the Boreas Pass line.
I wouldn't mention this but there are maps and grades to justify them.
