Phil,
Those two stories made my day as I work into the Saturday evening!!!
Here's another one along those lines. One of my video competitors wanted to mount some cameras on 3985 one year and they were those hi-8 type cameras and a special mount was made to get the rods from behind them. One of the crewmembers advised that it could get kinda hot back there due to the firebox being nearby, and during operation the fire is working pretty good all the time! This guy scoffed at the notion and took off chasing the train to the next service stop.
At the service stop he went to retreive his cameras and either take them off completely or change tapes or batteries I don't know for sure.
Anyway he went to detatch the one back under the cab near the firebox, and a loud scream was heard.
Apparently the camera had partially melted and the plastic had burned his hand as he grabbed it.
The guy who told me the story and I got a good laugh, and from then on I nicknamed him "Meltdown Productions". I believe the tape was ruined as well.
I have had my share of horror stories, but the Melting camera pretty beats my personal ones.
